In one of my Creative Writing classes at Michigan, we had to read and discuss a short story with one of the professors, a writer named Nicholas Delbanco. When I remarked that his story was reminiscent of John Updike’s “Couples”, he laughed and said that Updike was a good friend of his, and that he’d been cut off the picture of Updike shown on the back cover of “Couples”. So that’s my one-degree-of-seperation-from-Updike story…

Envious seemed more like it 🙂 The picture in question was apparently of Updike laughing at a joke Mr. Delbanco had just told him, so he seemed a bit chagrined he’d been left out of the photograph. Or at least that’s how he came across 🙂

The worst part was the short story he wrote was about a guy who’d broken up with a famous actress, and while he assured us the story was based on his real life, he refused to tell us who the actress was, only that she was “People-magazine-cover famous” 🙂 Twenty years later, I still feel gypped 🙂
