Probably the best word imported into English in recent years comes from German: schadenfreude, which is defined as deriving pleasure from the misery of others. I am deriving a certain satisfaction from seeing that the same old men that brought us the Tienamen Square Massacre in ’89 are now having their ultimate PR triumph squelched by the efforts of Tibetan protesters.

I’m only sorry that a disabled Chinese woman that was carrying the torch in Paris was jostled by the demonstrators, but other than that, I’m happy that the market-oriented dictators aren’t getting away with doing a snow job on the entire world. And any disrepute that rubs off on the IOC I’m okay with too. Apparently, those corrupt Olympic committee people prefer to award games to dictatorships, theorizing that authoritarian regimes run the meets more efficiently. But human-rights abuse isn’t supposed to be one of the Olympic ideals, so maybe this will finally teach them to pick their host cities with a little more care…

But ain’t just like the Germans to come up with a word to describe that happy feeling you get when something bad happens to someone you hate? It sounds like it came right out of the Lexicon of Persecution…

I see from today’s news stories that the Chinese are suddenly anxious to talk to the Tibetans, so I guess they’re finally running scared…
